At Q+A HQ we were incredibly excited about our launch with none other than PrettyLittleThing! Their brand is all about making style accessible to all budgets and body types, which is exactly what we stand for, making this a partnership made in heaven! Plus, who doesn’t want to shop skincare and fashion all at once?
As a UK based business, with a strong focus on innovation, we like to think PLT and Q+A are cut from the same cloth (pun intended..). It’s especially exciting to be in an emerging beauty category alongside PLT’s gorgeous catalogue of new makeup brands! Which is why we thought this week would be a great time to talk about how your skincare affects your makeup, and how to achieve flawless results thanks to your daily Q+A routine! I’ll give my usual educational spiel, and then our lovely Marketing Coordinator Lucy will be joining us for some extra expertize, as she’s quite the fan of a glamorous makeup look.
So let’s get one thing straight, the way you take care of your skin 100% has an effect on your finished makeup look, and gone are the days (at least I surely hope) where we use makeup to simply hide away our skin. Because chances are, if you’re hoping concealer and foundation will hide your skin woes indefinitely, you may not be giving your skin the attention it needs. It seems to me that all this free time indoors has people swinging one of two ways; either giving their skin a break by going makeup-free, or loading up the YouTube tutorials and going to town. But in the infamous, translated, words of the Old De Paso taco girl, why not both?
The real issue that makeup causes to our skin is what we trap underneath. If you don’t apply to clean skin, all the oils, dirt, and I have to say it, dead skin cells, can’t go anywhere but into your pores. If you go to bed without taking your makeup off, all those irritants and pollutants are stuck with you even longer, which is why you’ll find your skin looking dull, red or with a new spattering of pimples when it finally all comes off. Gross, right? We talk a lot these days about products which are either comedogenic (blocks your pores) or non-comedogenic (doesn’t block your pores) but the reality is most products which are thought of as comedogenic aren’t actually the trouble makers, it’s what they trap in. So friends, wash your face!
And, what about primers? Well, wearing makeup can heighten your existing skin type problems, and your skin can’t absorb any moisture to keep hydrated. Primers generally moisturize your skin, thereby smoothing your complexion ready for more layers, as well as providing the right texture for easy application and a long lasting finish. They’re really a hybrid product to help join the skincare and makeup worlds! (It’s no wonder many people will use their favourite primer alone for a glowing no-makeup look)
But what if I told you that you didn’t need a primer… 👀 I’ll pass on to Lucy for her low-down on how Q+A can help you achieve flawless makeup!
Tip One: Pick the right cleanser
As Amy mentioned, it's important to cleanse your skin before applying makeup, not just when taking it off! What is equally as important is choosing the correct cleanser. Using an oil-based cleanser prior to makeup application can cause the product to slide off your skin, leading to creasing and the dreaded patchiness. That’s not what you want if you’re trying to achieve a flawless finish! Stick to a water-based cleanser in the morning like our Q+A Peppermint Daily Cleanser.
Tip Two: Add Hyaluronic Acid to your regime
Hyaluronic Acid is an ingredient loved by expert MUAs and has been added into many foundation and primer formulations. This hydrating and skin firming active is a great choice pre-makeup, as it helps your skin to retain moisture post-cleanse. A water-based serum like our Hyaluronic Acid is a great option as it hydrates without clogging your pores or leaving your skin feeling greasy. For best results, be patient! If you’ve got time on your side, apply it to damp skin and let it soak in for 10-15 minutes before applying your makeup. If you’re in a rush, try the Q+A Peptide Facial Serum. It also includes Hyaluronic Acid, can be applied to dry skin and is fast-absorbing.
Tip Three: Forgotten your primer? Try 5-HTP
Okay, so this tip comes from customer feedback, but I thought it was worth sharing! Lots of our lovely customers have been using the Q+A 5HTP Face and Neck Cream as a primer, with fab results (think glass skin)! We think this could be because of its soothing and lifting properties, yet light-weight and easily absorbed formula. Plus, if you’re on a budget, what’s better than a multi-purpose product?
Tip Four: Liquorice Lip Oil = a great lip gloss swap!
I'm sure you know that a glossy lip is trending right now! But even though I love the way a high-shine gloss looks, I hate the tacky texture that often comes with it. This is where the Q+A Liquorice Lip Oil comes in. It leaves your lips looking glossy and moisturized without that sticky finish, and is packed with natural actives like Soy Bean and Liquorice Root that actually plump your pout. It's a win-win product!
We’re confident these tips will help you on your way to a flawless base! Head over to PLT where you can shop the full Q+A range, plus some amazing beauty brands which will complete your desired look; whether you’re going full glam or keeping it natural.
Here’s to glowing skin and flawless makeup,
